Poplar Taneshima ist eine siebzehnjährige Highschool-Schülerin, die in dem Familienrestaurant Wagnaria auf der Insel Hokkaido arbeitet. Der Beliebtheits- und Bekanntheitsgrad des Restaurants zwingt die Belegschaft nach neuen Aushilfen zu suchen und so wird Poplar beauftragt einen neuen Mitarbeiter zu finden. Ihr anfänglicher Misserfolg endet in einer Begegnung mit Souta Takanashi, einem sechzehnjährigen Mitschüler, der eine Vorliebe für kleine, süße Sachen hat. Er findet die quirlige, knuffige Poplar auf Anhieb sympathisch und kann ihr ihre Bitte nicht ausschlagen. Was ihn dann aber im Restaurant erwartet, hätte er niemals vermutet: Die Belegschaft ist ein wild zusammengewürfelter Haufen der verrücktesten und schrägsten Menschen, die man sich vorstellen kann.
