Shuna’s Journey (1983)

Shuna no Tabi /

Information

Description

Shuna is a young prince of a small mountain valley that is not well off as it suffers from famine. One day, he finds an old traveller who is close to death and carries a bag of golden seeds. At his deathbed, he tells Shuna that he, too, had once been a young prince in a similar situation, having received such seeds from a traveller. The grain that came from this seed would be able to conquer hunger.

Shuna decides to set out on a long journey to find more golden seeds and satisfy the hunger of his people. Far to the west, where the moon is said to be at home, is where he was to find what he is looking for. Together with his mount, Yakkul, Shuna spends months travelling, filled with hardship and danger. In the process, he also learns about the gruesome story behind breeding and trading the coveted seeds. Can the young prince still reach his goal and possibly end further suffering?

Annotation:
The manga is based on an old Tibetan story and was also to receive an anime adaptation, but the author could not convince a studio in either Japan or China to animate the work. A year later, the manga version of “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” was adapted, while a mount from “Princess Mononoke” not only looks deceptively similar but is also called Yakkul.
