Con la delicadeza que le caracteriza, Jiro Taniguchi retrata en esta ocasión la infancia y adolescencia de Tomoji Uchida. A través de la narración de sus primeros años de vida hasta el matrimonio con Fumiaki Ito, marcados por acontecimientos dolorosos, el autor deja plasmada en sus viñetas la vida de las zonas rurales de Japón, humildes y muy ligadas a las tradiciones, características que son, ciertamente, muy del gusto del autor.

Campagna giapponese, inizi del XX secolo. Tomoji Uchida, tredici anni, torna a casa dopo la scuola. Fumiaki Itô, diciannove anni, termina proprio in quel momento la sua breve visita in casa Uchida, e si allontana con la macchina fotografica in spalla. Il richiamo di un falco echeggia d’improvviso e gli occhi dei due giovani scrutano all’unisono l’azzurro terso tra le nuvole. Non sanno l’uno dell’altro. Non sanno di essere così vicini. Non sanno che da quel momento li unisce una sottile e inconsapevole connessione cerebrale. E che le loro vite si incroceranno sette anni dopo, destinate a una delicata e dolcissima storia d’amore. Ispirandosi all’esistenza di due personaggi reali – fondatori di un’importante branca religiosa del buddismo – Jirô Taniguchi traccia il tenero ritratto di un’adolescente che cresce nell’atmosfera del Giappone rurale tra le due guerre, con i suoi ritmi scanditi dalle stagioni e dal lavoro della terra.
