Seuls survivants d’un naufrage, un frère et une sœur échouent sur une île isolée; la tentation de Saint-Antoine se rejoue à travers les malheurs d’un abbé bienveillant; au soir de sa vie, un masseur aveugle et avaricieux cache sa fortune d’une étrange façon; une jeune fille et son frère handicapé tentent de survivre sans ressources dans le Japon d’avant-guerre.

Après avoir adapté à plusieurs reprises l’œuvre de Ranpo Edogawa (L’Île panorama paru chez Casterman), Maruo poursuit son exploration d’œuvres majeures de la littérature japonaise moderne, en reprenant et magnifiant L’Enfer en bouteille, un des récits les plus célèbres de Kyûsaku Yumeno.
