Nachdem er das Comiczeichnen endgültig aufgegeben hat, sattelt Sukegawa Sukezou um: Er handelt mit gebrauchten Kameras, arbeitet als Fährmann und verkauft in einer Bude am Flussufer Steine in allen denkbaren Formen, in der Hoffnung, unter den Hausierern, Glücksrittern und sonstigen Versagern, mit denen er seine Geschäfte macht, zu einem Erfolg zu kommen. Doch er scheitert immer wieder und ist unfähig, für seine Familie zu sorgen. Das Einzige, was er dabei gewinnt, ist ihre Verachtung.

Il libro racconta la vita di un uomo incapace di provvedere alla sua famiglia, un sognatore i cui progetti finiscono sempre per scontrarsi con la dura realtà.
