Homunculus (2003)

Homunculus tells the story of a middle aged man, who spends his days living in a car, smack inbetween a park infested with homeless people and a large, upper-class hotel complex. He has nothing, yet he is always classily dressed and looks well taken care of, despite the fact he sleeps in his car. Once a day, he always takes the car out for a ride, no matter what the weather. One day, an oddly dressed young man approaches him, and asks him if he would like to participate in a little experiment... Involving having a hole drilled in his skull. He promptly refuses; he has no need for money anyway. The next day, however, his car runs out of gas and gets towed. Desperate for money to get his car back, he approaches the young man and accepts to have the hole drilled in his skull. ''A safe procedure.'', he is assured. But then, of course, that’s when the side effects kick in...

Utilizando a Susumu Nakoshi como conejillo de indias para sus estudios sobre trepanación, Manabu Itô pretende descubrir lo que no se enseña en la Facultad de Medicina. El estudio del ser humano, más alla de la carne y el hueso. Susumu Nakoshi no está muy seguro de los efectos que esto tendrá, ya que abrir un agujero en tu frente no parece ni muy seguro, ni muy saludable, pero necesita el dinero para recuperar su coche, su único amor; además, 700 mil yenes le parece un buen precio.

Susumu è uno strano e misterioso individuo, con un passato da nascondere e il vizio della menzogna. Indossa un completo, ha un aspetto distinto, eppure è un senzatetto. Vive ai margini di un parco, residenza fissa di un gruppo di clochard, e sebbene spesso si unisca a loro, allo stesso tempo mantiene le distanze, dimostrando diffidenza per tutto e tutti. L’unica cosa a cui è legato è la sua macchina, una specie di ventre materno, di cui sente il morboso bisogno. E proprio per guadagnare i soldi necessari a riscattare l’amato veicolo, rimosso dalla polizia, Susumu accetta di sottoporsi alla Trapanazione, un intervento chirurgico al cranio teso a destare i sensi sopiti dell’uomo. L’esperimento è condotto e finanziato da un ricco ed eccentrico studente di medicina, curioso di addentrarsi nel mondo del paranormale…
