Die Schülerin Saki gerät durch eine geheimnisvolle Schriftrolle in die Welt des Romans Hoshin Engi aus dem alten China. Dort trifft sie auf dessen Hauptfigur Shiga, der als Taikobo eine neue Dynastie errichten und alle Beteiligten zu Göttern ernennen soll. Doch Shiga benimmt sich so gar nicht wie ein Held: Ihm ist jeder Handgriff zu viel und er möchte am liebsten mit alledem nichts zu tun haben. Saki will zwar unbedingt nach Hause zurück, doch je mehr sie erlebt, desto weniger kann sie ihre Augen vor dem verschließen, was die Ernennung der Götter wirklich bedeutet. Kann sie Shiga dabei helfen, der Taikobo zu sein, der keine Götter ernennt?
