Gemeinsam mit seiner älteren Schwester lebt der sechsjährige Shio im Armenviertel des Dorfs Ah-Mun. Er ist ein aufgeweckter Junge mit heller Haut und langen Ohren, der nichts mehr liebt als Bücher zu lesen. Da er jedoch mit seiner Hautfarbe und Ohrenform in der vornehmlich arabisch-anmutenden Gegend wie ein Fremder wirkt, hänseln ihn die anderen Kinder und er fühlt sich oft elend. Am liebsten würde Shio den ganzen Tag in der örtlichen Bibliothek verbringen, aber leider haben dort Leute aus seinem Viertel keinen Eintritt. Dieses „Pack“ aus Dieben und Armen will der Büchereivorsteher Ose Menes nicht bei sich haben. Seine siebenjährige Tochter Sakiya sieht dies erfreulicherweise anders und verschafft Shio heimlich Zutritt zur Bücherei. Er träumt davon, dass irgendwann ein Held erscheint und ihn mit auf ein Abenteuer nimmt. Als eines Tages vier Kahuna, Bibliothekarinnen aus der größten Bibliothek der Welt in Ajtzak im Dorf Halt machen, macht Shio eine schicksalhafte Begegnung …
