Als Laura 10 Jahre als ist, zieht sie mit ihren Eltern und ihrem kleinen Hamster Hamtaro in eine neue Stadt.

Laura lernt schnell neue Freunde kennen und spielt häufig mit ihnen außerhalb ihres Hauses. Was Hamtaro zu großen Abenteuern verleitet. Denn jedes mal wenn Laura nicht zu Hause ist, bricht Hamtaro aus und trifft sich mit seinen »Ham-Ham-Freunden« (neunzehn fröhlich-freundlichen Hamstern), in einer versteckten, unterirdischen Wohnung. Mit ihnen erlebt er mancherlei Abenteuer, ohne dass es sein Frauchen bemerkt.
