The Lines that Define Me (2019)

Since Sousuke Aoyama lost his parents in a traffic accident, he doesn’t really know what to do with his life. At an exhibition, he happens to meet the Sumi-e artist Kozan Shinoda, whose paintings he likes very much. Something about the student begins to interest the older man, so he offers to become his apprentice. This, in turn, does not suit Kouzan’s niece at all, who does not want to accept his initially rather half-hearted attempts to paint. But with every new stroke Sousuke puts on paper, he rediscovers the joy of life he thought he had lost and admits to himself that Kouzan’s first impression of him was not so wrong.

Seit Sousuke Aoyama seine Eltern bei einem Verkehrsunfall verloren hat, weiß er nicht mehr so recht, was er mit seinem Leben anfangen soll. Bei einer Ausstellung trifft er zufällig den Sumi-e Künstler Kozan Shinoda, dessen Bilder ihm sehr gefallen. Etwas an dem Studenten beginnt den älteren Mann zu interessieren, deswegen bietet er ihm an, sein Lehrling zu werden. Das wiederum passt Kouzans Nichte überhaupt nicht, die seine zunächst recht halbherzigen Versuche zu malen nicht akzeptieren will. Doch mit jedem neuen Strich, den Sousuke zu Papier bringt, entdeckt er seine verloren geglaubte Lebensfreude wieder und gesteht sich ein, dass Kouzans erster Eindruck von ihm gar nicht so verkehrt gewesen ist.
