Chengfeng Duans Tante ist eine Konkubine des Kaisers. Da sie „nur“ ein Mädchen zur Welt gebracht hat, möchte sie diese „den Phönix zum Drachen machen“ und ihre Tochter gegen Chengfeng Duan austauschen, um ihre Stellung am Hof zu retten. Um dies zu verhindern, täuscht die Familie von Chengfeng Duan vor, dass er krank und schwach ist, doch die Konkubine hegt Zweifel an seinem schlechten gesundheitlichen Zustand und schikaniert weiterhin die Familie. Trotz dieser Zweifel lässt die kaiserliche Konkubine schließlich ihren Plan, die Babys auszutauschen, fallen.

Und so wächst Chengfeng Duan bei seinen leiblichen Eltern auf. Um sein Schicksal in glückliche Bahnen zu lenken, holen die Eltern Shuchan Yue, die Tochter eines korrupten Beamten, ins Haus. Die beiden heiraten und obwohl sie eine innige Liebe verbindet, wird sie von der Familie misshandelt und schließlich verstoßen...
