Coo no Sekai (1999)

Seventh grader Hayashi Renei is troubled by a strange dream: Her dead brother - killed in an automobile accident - comes back to life as Coo. The dream comes again the following night and then every night thereafter. Coo’s world is a cruel one - crueler than the real world, even - with its own share of pain, suffering and sadness. Renei is searching for her house with her brother and others whom she meets in Coo’s world so that she can return to reality and the land of the living…

Die Siebtklässlerin Hayashi Renei hat immer wieder einen seltsamen Traum: Ihre tote Mutter erweckt wieder zum Leben. Als Coo lebt sie dann in einer grausamen Welt, wo Schmerz und Leid zum Alltag gehören. Renei hat diesen Traum fortan jede Nacht und dann entscheidet sie sich mit Hilfe ihres Bruders und den anderen Gestalten, denen sie in Coos Welt begegnet, aus diesem Traum zu flüchten und wieder in die Realität zurück zu gelangen.

Renei è una bambina di 12 anni che ha appena cominciato a frequentare le medie, ha perso il padre all’età di due anni: così vive con la madre e la nonna. E' matura, curiosa, riflessiva e indifesa. Renei sogna e noi, con lei penetriamo nel mondo di Coo. Nel sogno la bambina parte alla ricerca della sua casa che non sa dove si trova. Il mondo di Coo non ha regole logiche è un po' strambo e meraviglioso, ma non è solo uno spazio fantastico fatto di cose bizzarre, è anche un mondo severo in cui esiste il pericolo, come nella realtà. Sognando, dimentica la morte del fratello e così di giorno in giorno la storia prosegue senza interrompersi; incontra strani personaggi e attraversa con coraggio situazioni al limite, al risveglio ritrova la quotidianità, altrettanto dura, della realtà.
