Auf der geheimnisvollen »Insel der Fledermäuse« erscheint ein mysteriöser Mönch und wünscht sich den Kopf von Chu Liu-hsiang. Der Herrscher der Insel verspricht ihm, diesen Wunsch zu erfüllen. Chu ahnt nichts von alledem. Erst als jemand versucht, ihn zu töten, bemerkt er die tödliche Gefahr, in der schwebt und von wo sie ausgeht.
Er macht sich auf den schwierigen Weg zur Insel und muss dabei viele lebensgefährliche Abenteuer bestehen. Auf der Überfahrt wird er mit dem Leben bedroht, sein Schiff wird versenkt und auch auf dem Schiff, das ihn rettet, droht ihm höchste Gefahr. Zudem muss er erfahren, dass jeder Fremde, der ungeladen auf die Insel kommt, hingerichtet wird. Und wer ist der Mönch, der seinen Kopf will?
