Der ältere Fischer Tadao, lebt mit seiner Enkelin Haru in einem kleinen Fischerdorf in Hokkaido. Als er seinen Job verliert, versucht Haru ihn zu bewegen, nach Tokyo zu ziehen, wo es größere Möglichkeiten und Jobchancen gibt, aber ihr Großvater weigert sich strikt in eine Großstadt zu ziehen. Auf der Suche nach einem Familienmitglied, das ihn aufnehmen könnte, verschlägt es die Beiden auf eine Reise zu der japanischen Hauptinsel Honshū.
Den ersten Halt machen sie bei seinem noch mürrischeren, älteren Bruder Shiego, und ihr gereizter Austausch offenbart, dass mehr als bloße Alterslaune hinter Tadaos sturer Art steckt. Während Haru selbstlos über die schwindenden Finanzen waltet, setzen sie ihre Reise auf der Suche nach einer passenden Unterkunft für ihren Großvater fort.
