Nachdem seine Frau, als Teil einer Intrige, einem Mordanschlag zum Opfer gefallen ist, will Scharfrichter Ittou Ogami die Schuldigen zur Strecke bringen. Hinter der Tat steckt jedoch der überaus einflussreiche Yagyuu-Clan, zu dem auch der Generalinspektor des Shoguns gehört.
Dieser bezichtigt ihn fälschlicherweise des Hochverrats, damit er unehrenhaft seines Amtes enthoben wird. Doch der Plan misslingt.
Trotzdem fällt Ittou beim Shogun in Ungnade. Er verweigert jedoch den Seppuku und flieht, wodurch er Namen und Titel verliert.
Seitdem zieht er als Rounin auf der Suche nach den Mördern seiner Frau durch die Lande. Seinen kleinen Sohn führt er dabei in einem hölzernen Kinderwagen mit sich. Auf einem ebenfalls mitgeführten Transparent bietet er außerdem seine Dienste als Auftragsmörder an.
