Kangchi, the Beginning (2013)

Priest So-Jung is known for his advices to people, turning out true most of the time. Park Moo-Sol receives said advice as well: “Raise this child up to the age of 20 and you shall get everything you wish for, just watch out that this child doesn’t take off his pearl bracelet.”

And warrior Dam Yeo-Wool gets another advice: “Under the peach tree you will meet your soulmate, but it is of great importance for you to never cross paths with him.”

Both messages refer to Choi Kang-Chi whose parents died shortly after his birth. His new father Moo-Sol rose to great fame in the region, but still Kang-Chi enjoys his life on the streets, causing trouble and ending up in battles. His new mother isn’t fond of this, as well as in the fact that there seems to be something wrong with Kang-Chi. Without his bracelet every injury heals up immediately and he seems to gain infinite power. Confronting her son, Kang-Chi starts to investigate his original family, causing great disaster to everyone he knows. In his investigation he doesn’t only find the man who killed his parents, but also the reason why: the Gu Family Book.

Mönch So-Jung hat für viele Menschen gute Ratschläge, die sich meist als wahr herausstellen. So auch für Park Moo-Sol, dem Besitzer einer Unterkunft, als er ein verwaistes Kind im Fluss treibend findet: „Zieh das Kind auf, bis es 20 Jahre alt ist, und all das, das du beginnst, wird dir gelingen. Achte nur darauf, dass das Kind nie sein Perlenarmband ablegt.“

Und zu der Kriegerin Dam Yeo-Wool sagt er: „Du triffst an einem Pfirsichbaum bei einem Sichelmond deinen Seelenverwandten, doch sorge dafür, dass du ihm für den Rest deines Lebens aus dem Weg gehst.“

Beide Aussagen beziehen sich auf Choi Kang-Chi, dessen Eltern kurz nach seiner Geburt verstarben. Kang-Chi ist trotz der mittlerweile überaus hohen Stellung seines Adoptivvaters Moo-Sol der klassische Straßenjunge und gerne in Reibereien verwickelt. Daran stört sich seine Adoptivmutter schon lange, genauso wie an der Tatsache, dass mit Kang-Chi irgendetwas nicht stimmt. Ohne sein Armband heilt jede Verletzung sofort und er zeigt übermenschliche Stärke. Als sie ihn damit konfrontiert, bricht für Kang-Chi eine Welt zusammen und er beginnt nachzuforschen, wer seine Eltern waren. Dabei findet er nicht nur Schreckliches über seine Herkunft heraus, sondern bringt auch noch alle Menschen in seinem Umkreis in Gefahr. Bei seinen Nachforschungen trifft er nämlich auf Jo Gwan-Woong, den Mann, der seine Eltern auf dem Gewissen hat und seinen Vater davon abhielt, etwas Wichtiges zu finden: das Gu Family Book.
