Utamaro and His Five Women (1946)

Edo, 18th century: Utamaro is an ukiyo-e painter and a master woodblock printmaker who specialises in portraits of beautiful women. He finds the models for his art in the brothels of Edo.

Utamaro meets several beautiful women in his life, for example, the courtesan Orui, who is so beautiful that even Edo’s best tattoo artist does not dare to engrave a motif on her. Utamaro, therefore, suggests that she be painted on the back so that the tattooist can cover the image. Shozaburo, the son of a wholesaler, falls in love with Orui and leaves his fiancée Okita who has also posed for Utamaro before. When Utamaro goes to a lake with his friends, he discovers an attractive woman named Oran, who he wants to be his next model …

Edo, 18. Jahrhundert: Utamaro ist ein Maler des Ukiyo-e-Stils und ein Holzschnittmeister, der sich auf Portraits schöner Frauen spezialisiert hat. Die Modelle für seine Kunst findet er in den Bordellen Edos.

Utamaro begegnet in seinem Leben so einigen schönen Frauen, z. B. der Kurtisane Orui, die so schön ist, dass selbst der beste Tätowierer Edos sich nicht traut, ihr ein Motiv zu stechen. Utamaro schlägt deshalb vor, auf ihren Rücken zu malen, damit der Tätowierer anschließend über das Bild darüber tätowieren kann. Shozaburo, der Sohn eines Großhändlers, verliebt sich in Orui und lässt seine Verlobte Okita zurück. Letztere stand ebenfalls schon für Utamaro Modell. Als Utamaro mit seinen Freunden zum See geht, entdeckt er eine attraktive Frau namens Oran, die sein nächstes Modell werden soll …
