Im zweiten Jahrzehnt des 13. Jahrhunderts befiehlt der alte Eroberer Dschinghis Khan, dass der vermutlich unsterbliche taoistische Priester Qiu Chuji ihn besuchen soll. Als Eskorte für Qiu Chuji entsendet der Khan seinen treuen General Liu Zhonglu mit einer kleinen Truppe seiner besten Krieger. Der General benötigt drei Jahreswechsel und 13 Pferde, um den Priester zu erreichen. Erst nach einem göttlichen Zeichen willigt der Priester trotz seines Alters von 72 Jahren ein, die lange und beschwerliche Reise zu Dschinghis Khan anzutreten. Da der Priester nicht mehr damit rechnet, das Ziel der Reise noch innerhalb seiner verbleibenden Lebenszeit zu erreichen, nimmt er auch einen fertigen Sarg mit auf die Reise.
