1944 im Pazifik. In einem japanischen Kriegsgefangenenlager im Dschungel von Java leben englische und australische Gefangene unter härtesten Bedingungen. Major Lawrence spricht als Einziger Japanisch. Lagerkommandant Yonoi respektiert ihn. Als Major Jack Celliers ins Lager eingeliefert wird, entwickelt sich ein Machtkampf. Yonoi will Celliers brechen.
