Im Japan zur Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts erklärt der amtierende Tokugawa-Shogun das Christentum für illegal. Rund 40.000 christliche Rebellen unter Führung des Adeligen Shiro Amakusa leisten 90 Tage Widerstand, bevor sie samt und sonders abgeschlachtet werden. Shiro jedoch schwört Rache, kehrt von den Toten zurück und sammelt fünf weitere Geisterkrieger um sich, mit denen er dem regierenden Shogun bald mächtig einheizt. Dann aber erwächst Shiro in dem Ausnahmekrieger Jubei ein gleichwertiger Gegner.
