Das 263 Meter lange Kriegsschiff „Yamato“ war der Stolz der japanischen Marine im Zweiten Weltkrieg und das größte Schlachtschiff der Welt, es wurde in den Jahren von 1937 bis 1941 gebaut und verfügte über eine legendäre Bewaffnung. Eingesetzt wurde die Yamato im Pazifikkrieg unter anderem in der Schlacht um die Midway. Am 7. April 1945 kam es dann zum ultimativem Gefecht mit den Amerikanern. Die Amerikaner benötigten ca. 386 (!) Trägerflugzeuge, um die Yamato in mehreren Angriffswellen zu versenken. 3060 Besatzungsmitglieder fanden den Tod, unter ihnen der Oberkommandierende der japanischen Flotte. Der Film erzählt die Geschichte zweier Freunde, die mit der Yamato in den Krieg zogen.
