Leutnant Shen Lian der kaiserlichen Garde ermittelt in einem Mordfall an einem Mitglied der Geheimpolizei. Seine Ermittlungen führen ihn schnell auf die Spur einer Rebellengruppe. Als er den Befehl bekommt die Malerin Bei Zhai zu eliminieren, da sie angeblich mit ihrer Kunst den mächtigen Berater des Kaisers Wei beleidigen soll und ihr vorgeworfen wird, zu dieser Rebellengruppe zu gehören, entschließt sich Shen, ihr zur Flucht zu verhelfen. Nach und nach kommt Shen mehreren Intrigen auf die Spur, welche bis hin zum Kaiserhof reichen.
