In einer Vorstadtgegend Tokios wird des Nachts ein Mann namens Ryuuichi Morimoto von einem Auto überfahren. Es finden zudem sich Anzeichen darauf, dass er einen Schlag auf den Kopf erlitt. Schnell geraten die Ehefrau Noriko, Begünstige einer Lebensversicherung des Toten über 300 Millionen Yen, sowie ihr Liebhaber Kazuhiko Tsukada unter Mordverdacht. Doch die beiden können wasserdichte Alibis aufweisen und führen den ermittelnden Inspektor Hibiki sowie Privatdetektiv Kouno spielend vor sich her. Entscheidend für die Lösung des Falles scheinen die Brieftaschen der Beteiligten zu sein, die alle eine ganz eigene Geschichte zu erzählen haben.
