Description
In China in the late 1930s, the large-scale advance of the Japanese invasion army begins. In the process, a family of small Chinese farmers has torn apart. One son, Zhang Zhongliang, joins a Chinese army medical column. His wife Sufen, his mother, and his son Kongeson stay behind – under Japanese authority. The other son, Zhangmin, goes underground to keep his family safe. During eight years, Sufen, her mother-in-law and her son experience great suffering.
During the same period, Zhongliang arrives in Chongqing, the capital of the Kuomintang regime. There he succumbs to the seduction of money, women and power, as, beyond the reach of the Japanese, China still has vast wealth. After the defeat of the Japanese, he moved to Shanghai with a new wife, a mistress and newly gained power. However, in his old homeland, he must realise that the supposedly dead live longer than they should have …

Im China der späten 1930er Jahren beginnt der großflächige Vormarsch der japanischen Invasionsarmee. Dabei wird eine Familie chinesischer Kleinbauern auseinander gerissen. Der eine Sohn, Zhang Zhongliang, schließt sich einer Sanitätskolonne der chinesischen Armee an. Seine Frau Sufen, seine Mutter und sein Sohn Kongeson bleiben am Ende zurück – unter japanischer Herrschaft. Der andere Sohn, Zhangmin, geht in den Untergrund, um die Familie nicht zu gefährden. In den acht Jahren erfahren Sufen, ihre Schwiegermutter und ihr Sohn großes Leid.
In der gleichen Zeit gelangt Zhongliang nach Chongqing, der Hauptstadt des Kuomintang-Regimes. Dort erliegt er den Verführung des Geldes, der Frauen und der Macht, da außerhalb der Reichweite der Japaner China noch immer über einen gewaltigen Reichtum verfügt. Mit einer neuen Ehefrau, einer Geliebten und einiger Macht, zieht er nach der Niederlage der Japaner mit seiner neuen Familie nach Shanghai.
