Schülerin Usagi Tsukino hat es mal wieder eilig auf dem Weg zur Schule, da sie wie fast jeden Morgen zu spät dran ist. Unterwegs fällt auf einmal eine Plüschkatze namens Luna aus dem Himmel und landet ihr mitten im Gesicht. In der Nacht wird sie dann von dieser Plüschkatze besucht und sie erklärt Usagi, dass sie eine der Sailor Beschützerinnen ist. Usagi kann sich ab sofort in Sailer Moon, Beschützerin von Liebe und Gerechtigkeit, verwandeln. Zusammen mit ihren neuen Freundinnen Ami Mizuno (Sailor Merkur), Rei Hino (Sailor Mars), Makoto Kino (Sailor Jupiter) sowie der Sängerin und Idol Minako Aino (Sailor Venus oder Sailor V) und dem mysteriösen maskierten Mann namens Tuxedo Kamen versucht Sailor Moon, die Mondprinzessin und den mystischen Silver Crystal zu finden und sie vor Queen Beryl und dem Dunklen Königreich zu beschützen.
