Eigentlich sollte der junge Dr. Noboru Yasumoto der Leibarzt des Shoguns werden, doch sein Vater veranlasst, dass er zuvor eine zeitlang im Armenkrankenhaus von Dr. Kyojio Niide, den man auch Rotbart nennt, zu arbeiten. Yasumoto ist wenig begeistert von der Vorstellung und versucht alles, um gleich wieder aus dem Krankenhaus hinausgeworfen zu werden. Neben seiner Abneigung gegen die arme Bevölkerung, kann er die unkonventionellen Methoden des Doktors nicht befürworten. Als Niide ihm aber die Verantwortung für die Heilung eines schwer misshandelten Mädchens übergibt, lernt Yasumoto, was es ausmacht, nicht nur ein guter Arzt, sondern auch ein besserer Mensch zu sein …
