Ein Mann kehrt nach Jahren in seine Heimat zurück um seinen Vater zu Grabe zu tragen. Seine Mutter besteht darauf, dass der Leichnam in einem Fußmarsch ins Dorf gebracht wird. Der Grund dafür reicht in die fünfziger Jahre zurück, als sie sich als Bauernkind und er als Dorfschullehrer kennenlernten und Jahre um ihre Liebe kämpfen mussten.
