Japan: im 19. Jh. ist das Land von Dämonen übersät, die sich in den Körpern der Menschen einnisten. Als der Dämonenjäger Izumo im Eifer des Gefechts versehentlich ein Mädchen tötet, hängt er von Gewissensbissen geplagt sein Schwert an den Nagel und heuert bei einem örtlichen Kabuki-Theater an, wo er später sehr berühmt wird und lernt auch eines Tages die hübsche Tsubaki kennen, die ohne Erinnerung an ihre Vergangenheit mit einem Zirkus durchs Land zieht.

Die wahre Bestimmung der jungen Frau ist jedoch mehr beunruhigend: ihr Körper soll der Dämonen-Königin Ashura als körperliche Hülle dienen. Um Tsubaki zu retten und die Ankunft Ashuras zu verhindern, greift Izumo wieder zu seinem Schwert und stellt sich der Herausforderung entgegen …
