Synopsis

Seibei Iguchi’s wife dies of tuberculosis during the last days of the Tokugawa period. Seibei is a low-income samurai of the lowest rank and lives in poor conditions. To pay for his wife’s funeral, he was even forced to dispose of a samurai’s most prized possession: his sword. Seibei is called “The Twilight Samurai” by his work colleagues because he always goes home immediately after work to take care of his two daughters.

One day, Seibei meets his old childhood friend Michinojo Iinuma, who tells him that his sister Tomoe – Seibei’s childhood friend – has returned as a divorced woman after her husband abused her. When Seibei is at Michinojo’s home one evening, Tomoe’s ex-husband is also present and challenges Michinojo to a duel. Seibei accepts instead of Michinojo, as he is the much better swordsman. Since he has sold his sword, he only competes with a bamboo sword but still wins the duel. To show appreciation, Tomoe takes care of Seibei’s daughters and helps out with his household.

Although it should remain a secret, the clan chief has learned of Seibei’s victory in the duel and orders him to kill the renegade samurai Yogo. Seibei reluctantly bows to the order, as it conforms to the samurai’s code of honour. This time the duel is about life and death …
