Black Rain (1989)

When the atomic bomb hits Hiroshima in 1945, Yasuko is on her way to her village with her uncle and aunt. To get there, they have to cross the now completely destroyed Hiroshima and witness the cruel suffering of the inhabitants first-hand. On the way to their village, they also get caught in a radioactively contaminated “black rain”.

Five years later, Yasuko wants to marry but can’t find a candidate because she is considered “radiation contaminated”. Thus, no one wants her, as she apparently can’t bear healthy children. Her uncle Shigematsu does not want to accept this and has the local doctor issue a health certificate stating that she is not affected by radiation sickness. At the same time, several inhabitants of the village die one after the other. They appeared healthy and lively on the outside but had also been exposed to the fallout around Hiroshima five years ago.

Als die Atombombe 1945 in Hiroshima niedergeht, befindet sich Yasuko mit ihrem Onkel und ihrer Tante auf dem Weg zu ihrem Dorf. Um dorthinzugelangen, müssen sie das nun völlig zerstörte Hiroshima durchqueren und bekommen das grausame Leid der Einwohner aus nächster Nähe mit. Auf dem weiteren Weg in ihr Dorf geraten sie auch in einen radioaktiv verseuchten »Schwarzen Regen«.

Fünf Jahre später will Yasuko heiraten, findet aber keinen Kandidaten, da sie als »strahlenverseucht« gilt und sie somit niemand haben will, da sie anscheinend keine gesunden Kinder gebären kann. Ihr Onkel Shigematsu will das nicht hinnehmen und lässt ihr vom örtlichen Arzt ein Gesundheitszeugnis ausstellen, das ihr bescheinigt, von der Strahlenkrankheit nicht betroffen zu sein. Zur gleichen Zeit sterben einige Einwohner des Dorfes kurz nacheinander. Diese wirkten zwar äußerlich gesund und munter, waren aber ebenfalls dem Fallout rund um Hiroshima vor fünf Jahren ausgesetzt.
