#1Wouldn't it be cool to have an SF anime with aliens, time travel and everything? I think it would.
This anime delivers on that front and has pretty good animation for the 2020s, but it's a bit unfocused. Cute Girls Doing Cute Things meets SF, is what it feels like for most of its runtime. There's a lot of poignant social criticism baked in, but what is missing is a character arc. Things happen. Good things, bad things, incredible things, but nothing leads anywhere. There's no payoff.
The two part movie is an alternative version that is shorter and has a different ending. I should have probably watched that one and skipped through this series to see what the differences are instead. It would have spared me the biggest issue this anime faces: it drags on. If it was just a bit shorter it would probably work better, is what I thought during it. Well, the movie is just that, but I didn't feel like watching the entire thing again, but different. I was glad when it was finally over.
Still one of the better anime of the 2020s I've seen so far.
