Description

“In the near future, media corporations are reaching for the stars, electrons and streams of light in the universe. But advanced computerisation has not yet wiped out nations and ethnic groups.”

These are the words of a stranger that immerse the viewer at the beginning. The plot begins with a diplomat’s office being stormed by the police because he is giving political asylum to someone. When he surrenders, he is shot dead. His murderer escapes by jumping out of the window of the skyscraper into the depths. It turns out that she is a cyborg, a human with an almost synthetic body.

We are in Japan in 2029, where cyborgs and artificial intelligence have long since become commonplace, but one thing still exists: political systems that are corrupt and weak. The story is about a Japanese anti-terrorist unit whose goal is to fight the negative sides of this progress. The widespread use of “cyber brains”, electronic access points to the brain, has by now made it possible to hack into a person’s brain and use it for criminal activities. Motoko Kusanagi is also a cyborg and leader of said unit; she and her team get caught up in a large system of political connections and power games and are now in danger of becoming mere pawns in this “game” themselves.
