Synopsis

A still nameless child is born into the turmoil of the Japanese civil war in the year 762. Because it has an unnatural horn on its forehead, it is labelled a demon by the people and cast out by its mother. But fortunately, the child is found by an old exorcist and lovingly brought up. She gives him the name Utsunomiko, which is soon abbreviated to Miko, meaning “Divine Child of Heaven”. She sees the horn on his forehead not as punishment from the gods, but as a blessing and a symbol of the unity of heaven and earth. Miko now grows up in the wilderness and learns to live in harmony with the spirits of the landscape.

One day, out of curiosity, he stumbles upon a small Japanese village where the inhabitants live in misery and poverty. Miko decides to help the people in this village with his spiritual powers. But when the Japanese imperial family gets wind of this, Miko is to be stopped from using his powers – by force if necessary …
