Synopsis

“The Dog of Flanders” tells the story of the orphan Nello. Raised by his grandfather, he did not have an easy childhood. His secret passion is painting, and one day, he wants to create magnificent paintings like his role model, Peter Paul Rubens. However, due to his grandfather’s poverty, Nello’s dream is likely to remain just that. Instead, day after day, the two of them have to take milk to the market in the nearest town to make ends meet.

One day, when they are back at the market, Nello notices how an ironmonger severely abuses his dog and uses it to pull his goods. Nello cannot bring himself to leave the dog behind and begs his grandfather to buy it from the trader – but for what money? His grandfather relents, but now he has to work even harder than before. So Nello takes his new dog Patrash home with him, but in the near future, he has to deal with a heavy burden of fate, with only his faithful companion at his side.
