Aoyama Motokos ältere Schwester ist eine überragende Schwertkämpferin und Exorzistin; sie erscheint als gesittete Frau in alter japanischer Tradition, kann aber gelegentlich ausgesprochen gewalttätig werden. Sie hat geheiratet und führt deshalb die Shinmeiryuu-Tradition ihrer Familie nicht aktiv fort, sondern wird die Leitung der Schwertkampfschule ihrer Familie an Motoko abtreten, sobald diese dazu in der Lage ist. Ihr Haustier und ständiger Begleiter ist ein Kranich namens »Shippu«.
Obwohl Motoko sich vor ihrer Schwester fürchtet, hat diese mit ihrer strikten Art (mit der sie Faulheit und Lügen hart bestraft) nur das Beste für deren Zukunft im Sinn, welchen Pfad diese auch einschlagen mag.
Tsurukos Ehemann, der diese aus Motokos Familie »entführt« hat (so empfindet dies Motoko zumindest) wird von der jüngeren Schwester in deren Alpträumen als Schildkröte gesehen - das ist der Grund für Motokos Schildkröten-Phobie.
