Shinji Mamiya, Sohn des berühmten Malers Shinzou Mamiya, ist selbst Künstler und Autor. Ein geheimnisumwitterter junger Mann, der von unvergänglicher Schönheit besessen ist und unter dem Pseudonym Shin Katsuragi ein Buch namens »Shell of Sheol« veröffentlicht hat, das Ereignisse schildert, die frappierende Ähnlichkeit zur aktuellen Serie von Verbrechen aufweist, bei der die abgetrennten Gliedmaßen junger Frauen ohne eine Spur des Körpers gefunden werden. Aus dem Nachlass seines Vaters übt das Bild Kara no Shoujo (»Girl in a Shell«) eine besondere Faszination auf ihn aus, die noch weiter angefacht wird, als er Touko Kuchiki begegnet, einer Schülerin, die der Frau auf dem Gemälde zum Verwechseln ähnlich sieht.
