Aoshi Shinomori ist der Anführer der Oniwa Banshu, einer Gruppe von Ninja – allesamt unübertroffene Meister der Kampfkunst.

Während der Bakumatsu-Zeit kam er als Ninja nicht zum Einsatz und auch in der Meiji-Zeit hat er es nur bis zum Rang eines Leibwächters geschafft. Um sich selbst und anderen gegenüber zu beweisen, ist es sein Ziel, der Stärkste von allen zu werden – und dabei ist ihm jedes Mittel recht.
