Zusammen mit ihrem Kollegen Dr. Tokita hat Dr. Atsuko Chiba eine neue Dimension in der Psychotherapieforschung möglich gemacht. Sie benutzt den DC Mini, ein Traumanalysegerät, das sie entwickelt haben, und kann dadurch mithilfe ihres Traum-Alter Egos Paprika in Träume eintauchen, um diese unmittelbar mitzuerleben und Patienten praktisch innerhalb ihrer Traumwelt zu therapieren.

Atsuko und Tokita verstehen sich gut; sie hält ihn aber auch für einen Kindskopf, der allzu leichtfertig mit seiner potenziell gefährlichen Erfindung umgeht. Meist gibt sie sich kühl und reserviert – ganz im Gegenteil zu Paprika – und versucht, in jeder Situation die Kontrolle zu behalten.
