So seltsam er auch aussieht, Utamaru ist eine Katze. Wird er nicht als solche erkannt, verletzt das seine Gefühle. Er ist sehr zutraulich und lässt sich gerne streicheln, gedrückt zu werden kann er allerdings nicht leiden. Meist ist Utamaru in Begleitung der kleinen Sakura zu finden, mit der er sich angefreundet hat. Obwohl er keine sichtbaren Gliedmaßen besitzt ist Utamaru sehr agil und besitzt eine ausgezeichnete Balance. Seit einer unheilvollen Begegnung mit einem Krebs hat er Angst vor Schalentieren
