Die jüdische Sophie musste aus Deutschland fliehen, da das Nazi Regime ihre Rasse nicht duldete. So floh sie zusammen mit ihrem geliebten Peter aus dem Land nach Shanghai. Aber auch dort konnte sie keinen Seelenfrieden finden, denn der korrupte Malraux tötete vor ihren Augen Peter, sodass sie einen schweren Schock erlitt. Seither kann sie sich an nichts mehr erinnern und ist in einem Krankenhaus untergebracht, wo sie von ihrem Bruder beschützt wird.
