Description

Motoko is the leader of Public Security Section 9 and takes on the role of deputy commander. She has extensive experience in hand-to-hand combat but also possesses strong leadership skills and a deep understanding of politics. In her spare time, she is occasionally shown contemplating her existence, whether she is actually human or merely a sophisticated artificial intelligence that has been made to believe it is human.

Annotation:
Motoko appears in several independent story universes within the “Ghost in the Shell” franchise. The timelines and character portrayals differ considerably in some cases, leading to contradictory information about events, relationships and the origins of Section 9. (For example: In “Arise”, Section 9 is founded in 2027, while in “Stand Alone Complex” the founding is dated to 2029). The various depictions should, therefore, be understood as alternative interpretations of the same figure, not as a consistently coherent biography.
