Giovanni ist einer der Arbeiter innerhalb der Gradisca-Minen und von großer, starker Statur. Er gilt unter den Arbeitern als eine Art Wortführer und ist einer der wenigen, der Romeo von Anfang an Respekt gegenüber bringt, obwohl er aus seinen Taten noch nicht ganz schlau wird. Nach dem Minenunglück wird er einer der Haupträdelsführer des Dorfes und unterstützt Romeo bei dessen Traum, einen Ort zu erschaffen, an dem jeder glücklich und zufrieden leben kann.
