Takuboku Ishikawa ist zwar hauptberuflich ein Poet – insbesondere die Tanka-Poesie beherrscht er meisterlich –, jedoch möchte er auch spannende Kriminalfälle lösen, weshalb er die Detektivkanzlei Woodpecker Detective’s Office gründete. Auf diese Idee kam er, nachdem Kyosuke Kindaichi, sein bester Freund, der aus derselben Heimatstadt kommt wie er, von einem Bekannten erzählt hatte, der damit seinen Unterhalt bestreitet.

Kyosuke beschreibt ihn als eine lügende, weinerliche, selbstzufriedene Plaudertasche, die trinkt und die Frauen liebt, und als einen romantischen Sadisten und einen Poeten, der weiter als jeder andere sehen kann.

Während des Falls des verstorbenen Kagami verliebte er sich in Tamaki. Je besser er sie kennenlernte, desto mehr Gedanken machte er sich über sich selbst und sein Leben. Er fing an, ein besserer Mensch werden zu wollen. Sie sagte ihm, er solle einen Roman für das Wohl der Menschheit schreiben. Nachdem der Fall gelöst wurde, fing er an, die Geschichte zwischen ihm und Tamaki in Form eines Romans niederzuschreiben.
