Byeon stammt aus dem »Märchen von Chunhyang«, einem der beliebtesten Märchen Koreas. Im Original fordert er den Beischlaf von Chunhyang, was diese nicht will, woraufhin er sie köpfen lassen will. Hier findet er Chunhyangs ausgelebte Homosexualität abstoßend und lässt ihn einsperren. Anschließend wird er aber von Chunhyangs gutem Freund Mongryong verführt und verliebt sich in diesen.
