Description

Sentai Filmworks is an American anime licensing company founded in 2008 by John Ledford. It is headquartered in Houston, Texas. The company is a subsidiary of AEsir Media.

At its inception, the company partnered with ADV Films to publish their licences through them. After ADV Films went bankrupt in 2009, Sentai Filmworks took over the production department of ADV Films.

In 2017, most of the publisher’s simulcasts were released in the US exclusively through Anime Strike. On 20 June 2017, it also launched a partnership with streaming platform HIDIVE, which includes several hundred titles, some of which are streamed outside North America.

In September 2017, Sentai Filmworks became the first major anime publisher to announce its gradual withdrawal from DVD production and to rely only on the Blu-ray format for physical releases (with individual exceptions). Most other publishers specialising in anime in the English-speaking world followed suit shortly afterwards.

At the beginning of January 2022, the parent company Sentai Holdings LLC was bought out by AMC Network through its subsidiary Digital Store, LLC.
