Synopsis
In “Children of the Whales”, the lives of the few inhabitants of this world are determined by sand because it seems to consist exclusively of a sea of sand. In the middle of this sea is an island called Mud Whale, whose inhabitants apparently do not know whether there are other inhabitants besides themselves. A large part of the population is “marked” because of their magical abilities called Saimia. But these come at a price: a not inconsiderable portion of their lifespan. Only a few people are lucky enough to be able to live their lives unmarked.
It is the year 93 of the Sand Era. Chakuro is a 14-year-old boy working as the island’s archivist – much to the surprise of his childhood friend Sami, whose control over the Saimia leaves much to be desired. Writing down what happened is not only part of his job but also his passion. His desire to learn more about the rest of the world comes true, in a way, when an unknown island drifts nearby. Chakuro, who becomes part of the exploration team, finds a girl named Lykos in a cave there.
Lykos also turns out to be marked, though she had to pay a different price: her emotions. She reveals that there are many soldiers like her in the outside world, fighting countless wars against each other. Shortly afterwards, the peaceful times on the Mud Whale seem to be over when a group of such soldiers appears …
