Shota, 26 ans, est un instituteur de maternelle qui n’a, dans sa vie professionnelle et privée, aucun lien avec le rakugo. Un jour, pour occuper les enfants, il leur lit Histoire du rakugo, un livre écrit par un maître de cet art : Doraku Sekishuntei. C’est une révélation pour Shota qui se précipite dans un yose (salle de spectacles de rakugo) pour écouter Doraku conter et l’implore de faire de lui son disciple.

Shota abandonne sa vie d’instituteur et prend le nom de Doraitchi Sekishuntei. C’est le début d’un apprentissage long et fastidieux qui le mènera – peut-être – au rang suprême de shin-uchi …
