Hatsu Takagi ist von einer seltenen Krankheit infiziert, die „Tempocardy“ genannt wird. Durch diese bleibt ihr nur eine gewisse Anzahl Herzschläge, wodurch ihre Lebensspanne deutlich kürzer ausfällt. Um Aufregung und das damit einhergehende schnellere Herzklopfen zu vermeiden, hat sich Hatsu isoliert und führt ein ruhiges, ereignisloses Leben. Als Hato Iijima von ihrer Krankheit erfährt, macht er es sich zur Aufgabe, sie ihre verbleibende Zeit frei und in vollen Zügen genießen zu lassen.
