Mai-chan ist eine sehr eigenständige Fünftklässlerin. Sie kauft ein und hilft ihrer Mutter auch im Haushalt. Als sie eines Tages von der Schule zurückkommt, erblickt sie auf den Treppenstufen ihres Zuhauses ein blondes jugendliches Mädchen namens Tamaki Mitsuya. Da es in Strömen regnet, beschließt sie, das von ihr als »One-chan« bezeichnete Mädchen mit ins Haus zu nehmen, um ihre Kleidung zu trocknen. Beim Versuch, irgendwas über die Fremde herauszubekommen, fängt bei dem Mädchen jedoch der Bauch an zu knurren. Mai beschließt, für sich und den Gast etwas zu kochen – ein leckeres Takikomi Gohan. Tamaki ist vom Geschmack des Gerichts sogleich vollauf begeistert.

Als Tamaki jedoch nach Hause gehen will, kommt der Schock für Mai: Sie ist die neue Nachbarin, die in ein leerstehendes Haus in der Nähe eingezogen ist. Ab sofort verbringen die beiden viel Zeit miteinander, denn Tamaki kann nicht wirklich kochen. Ein lustiges Alltagsdrama beginnt!
