Synopsis
Shikibu Murasaki’s “The Tale of Genji” tells the life of Prince Hikaru Genji, living in the Heian period, which is marked by passion, romance and unhappy love affairs.
Hikaru’s mother, the emperor’s favourite concubine, dies shortly after giving birth to him. Luckily for him, his mother’s lover takes him in; thus, he grows up in the imperial family: he does not have to work, passes his time with the fine arts and pursues military training. His interest in the opposite sex also comes very early because Hikaru soon begins an affair with the emperor’s young wife and even fathered a child with her, who later grows up to be the emperor’s son. Despite some guilt on his part, he enters into further love affairs with many other women – including a lady from an opposing party. From then on, the young prince’s life takes a decisive turn …
